How to deal with debt collectors in Australia

Constant calls, letters and texts from debt collectors are stressful — and a lot of people don't realise they have rights, and options. Here's what collectors can and can't do, and how to take back control.

What debt collectors are — and aren't — allowed to do

Debt collectors have to follow rules set by ASIC and the ACCC. They can contact you a reasonable amount to discuss a debt, but they cannot harass you, contact you at unreasonable hours, mislead you, or use threats. If contact has crossed into harassment, that's not something you have to simply put up with.

Should you talk to them?

Ignoring collectors rarely makes the problem go away and can make it worse. But you also don't have to face them alone or agree to something you can't afford on the spot. You're allowed to take time, get advice, and have someone deal with them on your behalf.

First steps to take control

We can take this over for you. Once we start dealing with your creditors and collectors, the back-and-forth comes off your plate. We can't promise a particular result, but we handle the conversation so you don't have to.

Common questions

Can debt collectors just keep calling me?

They can contact you to discuss a debt, but there are limits, and harassment is not allowed. If contact is excessive, you have options.

Can I get someone to deal with debt collectors for me?

Yes. You can authorise a representative to communicate and negotiate with them on your behalf.

What if I can't afford to pay anything right now?

That's worth talking through — there are options including hardship arrangements, and free financial counselling can help you understand them.
